In 2017, it was announced that the Road House remake was back on and that Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal would take on the role of Dalton. The Road House remake, however, will live to fight another round. Whether coincidence or not, Rousey’s role in Road House, and her acting career as a whole, died on the vine very much like her fighting career. Rousey would also lose her UFC title to Holm at UFC 193. It was during this time that Rousey began her film career with performances in The Expendables 3, the Entourage film, and Fast & Furious 7.

We reckon it’s Swayze’s most underrated role, and it’s a must-watch for anyone who’s into ’80s schlock. Scenes featuring a shirtless, sweaty Swayze doing tai-chi on a Missouri ranch, are combined with what can only be described as “Dalton-isms” in which the mullet-haired bouncer with a philosophy degree from NYU shares wisdom such as “nobody ever wins a fight” and “my way… or the highway.”Īlso starring Sam Elliot ( A Star is Born) and Kelly Lynch ( Drugstore Cowboy), Road House has proven to be an entertaining so-bad-its-good slice of ‘80s filmmaking that many still have a fondness for, and others have tried and failed to capitalise on. Just as entertaining was the philosophical and even at times spiritual leanings of the Dalton character, which Swayze portrayed with steadfast earnest. Swayze’s insistence on performing his own stunts during the testosterone-heavy production often resulted in the actor being bloodied and bruised, and in one instance sustaining broken ribs. Fresh off the back of hit movie Dirty Dancing, Swayze wanted to take on a much more masculine, gritty, and physical role that would capitalise on his athleticism, with the Texan-born actor a trained dancer and star high school football player.įor the extensive fight scenes in Road House, Swayze was trained by champion kickboxer Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, who would claim that Swayze was so good he could have become a competitive fighter. Key to it all is Swayze’s performance as Dalton. An ’80s action-Western with plenty of martial arts fight scenes and gratuitous nudity, Road House has become a guilty pleasure cult classic since its 1989 theatrical release, with many fans of action cinema in love with the violently cheesy action scenes that range from bar-room brawls to mano-a-mano martial arts fight sequences, as well as the ever-quotable dialogue from which gems such as “pain don’t hurt” and “I want you to be nice until it’s time to not be nice” were first uttered.
